NEW DELHI: The three-day nationwide strike planned by bank employees from Monday has been called off following a crucial discussion held at 9.30 pm today. The decision brings an end to the proposed nationwide strike scheduled from September 28 to 30, which was expected to affect banking services across the country.

The strike had been called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body comprising various organisations representing bank employees and officers. The principal demand behind the strike was the implementation of a five-day banking week.

At present, banks in the country remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month. Bank employees’ organisations have been demanding that all Saturdays be declared holidays, thereby introducing a five-day banking week.

One of the major reasons behind the organisations’ protest was the lack of final government approval for the five-day banking week proposal, despite the Indian Banks’ Association having approved the proposal. Employees’ organisations had also raised issues including the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI).

The announcement of a three-day strike from September 28 had raised concerns over significant disruption to banking services. Since September 26 was the fourth Saturday and September 27 was Sunday, the strike could have resulted in bank branch operations being disrupted for nearly five consecutive days.

In view of the situation, the Central Government and bank managements held discussions with employees’ organisations. Conciliation talks were also held on September 22 in an effort to avoid the strike, but no final agreement was reached at that time. The organisations subsequently decided to proceed with the strike.

Meanwhile, public sector banks and regional rural banks had earlier decided to remain open on Sunday, September 27, ahead of the proposed strike. The move was intended to provide customers with an opportunity to carry out urgent banking transactions. With the permission of the Reserve Bank, branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests operated on Sunday.

With the strike now withdrawn, normal operations at bank branches are expected to continue from Monday. Customers are expected to avoid the disruption that could have affected direct banking services, cheque transactions, money transfers and other branch-based services.

However, further discussions will be required on employees’ demands, including the five-day banking week. Following the understanding reached in today’s discussions and the withdrawal of the strike, further talks on the related issues are expected to continue.

The implementation of a five-day banking week, with every Saturday declared a holiday, has been a major demand of bank employees’ organisations. A proposal concerning a five-day banking week had emerged as part of the agreement related to the 2024 wage revision. However, the issue remained pending due to the lack of final approval at the government level.

The withdrawal of the strike is expected to provide relief to bank customers, traders and industrial establishments across the country. In particular, avoiding a three-day strike is considered significant for banking operations given the half-yearly financial closing scheduled for September 30.
